Djed Spence has signed a new long-term contract at Tottenham, the PA news agency understands.

The versatile full-back, who has Kenyan roots, only signed fresh terms last October until 2028 but has now been rewarded for a fine breakthrough campaign at Spurs.

Spence made 35 appearances in the 2024-25 season after eventually being handed his full debut in December – two-and-a-half years after first joining the club.

Initially deemed a “club signing” by former boss Antonio Conte in 2022, the former Nottingham Forest defender endured mixed loan spells at Rennes, Leeds, and Genoa.

While Spence could have left Spurs last summer, he forced his way into the plans of then-manager Ange Postecoglou, playing a crucial role in the club’s Europa League triumph.

New head coach Thomas Frank has also shown faith in him, handing him a starting role in Wednesday’s Super Cup clash against Paris Saint-Germain.

The latest chapter in the 25-year-old Kenyan’s resurgence is an improved deal that secures his long-term future at the London club.

Speaking before the deal was finalised, Spence expressed optimism about Tottenham’s future, including potential new signings, the Champions League challenge, and bouncing back from their midweek shoot-out defeat.

He also stressed the importance of defensive solidity under Frank, noting: “Be solid at the back and our target is to keep as many clean sheets as possible. You do that and you win trophies, you win titles.”
