Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed has attributed Harambee Stars’ remarkable run at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) to the personal involvement of President William Ruto.
Speaking in an interview with NTV on Monday, Mohammed said the Head of State’s encouragement, visits, and financial support played a pivotal role in lifting the squad’s morale. He estimated that between fifty and sixty per cent of the team’s success could be linked to Ruto’s contributions.
“I totally agree that we should give the President his flowers,” Mohammed remarked. “The motivation, the inspiration—you see it in his eyes. By now, he knows each and every player by name.”
The FKF boss explained that a unique bond has developed between Ruto and the national team, pointing out that the camaraderie is clear during every interaction. According to Mohammed, the President often inspires the players with the words: “Mmecheza kama nyinyi, na mimi sasa nitacheza kama mimi” (You have played your part, now I will play mine)—before backing up his promise.
He revealed that Ruto regularly visits the team at training sessions and hotels, often away from media coverage, to engage with the players not just about football but also their personal welfare.
Mohammed further confirmed that all financial pledges made by the President after matches had been honoured promptly. “Nobody can contradict me on this one because I have personally been present as we fulfill the pledge,” he asserted.
Harambee Stars’ stunning victory over Zambia last week sparked nationwide celebrations, with many fans praising the team’s progress in the tournament.
President Ruto himself congratulated the squad, describing their journey as a story of resilience and national pride.
“At the beginning of CHAN, no one gave our Harambee Stars a chance of going past the group stages. After all, we were in the so-called Group of Death, yet our boys have triumphed,” Ruto stated.
