Kenya has officially been awarded the hosting rights for the 3rd African School Games in 2029, following a decision by the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA).
The confirmation came through a formal letter from ANOCA President Mustapha Berraf after the organisation’s Extraordinary Executive Committee Meeting.
Kenya submitted its bid on August 4, 2025, positioning itself as a key player in continental sports hosting. The Games will be held in Nairobi.
National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) President Shadrack Maluki welcomed the announcement, describing it as a “historic moment” and a “continental celebration of youth, diversity, and ambition.” He said the country would use the opportunity to showcase its commitment to sports development.
NOC-K Secretary General John Ogolla noted that Kenya’s bid combined technical capacity and symbolic value.
“This is not just about sport. It is about fusing education, culture, and competition to inspire the next generation,” he stated.
The news comes as Team Kenya wrapped up a strong showing at the inaugural African School Games in Algeria, collecting 11 medals; five gold in athletics, one silver in boxing, and five bronze across wrestling, cycling, and hurdles.
In addition to hosting the African School Games, Kenya is also preparing to host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027, further solidifying its status as a key venue for major continental sporting events.
Currently, Kenya is co-hosting the African Nations Championship (CHAN) alongside Uganda and Tanzania, demonstrating its readiness and capability to organize high-profile tournaments.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya said preparations for 2029 will be boosted by ongoing infrastructure projects, including installing a canopy at Nyayo National Stadium after the CHAN tournament and completing the Talanta Centre Stadium by year-end.
“We are committed to providing world-class facilities that will make Kenya a leading sports hub in the region,” he said.
The 2029 Games are expected to attract young athletes from across the continent, providing a platform for competition and cultural exchange.
