At least six people lost their lives, 16 others sustained injuries, and 50 households were destroyed following a devastating fire in Kitui Village, Majengo, Kamukunji, Nairobi County.
In a statement, Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan described the fire as one of the deadliest incidents ever witnessed in the constituency.
“This tragedy marks one of the deadliest fires in Kamukunji. Emergency teams are on the scene, searching the affected area for additional victims. Many of the injured have been taken to nearby hospitals for treatment,” he said.
“My heartfelt condolences go out to the residents of Kitui Village who have lost family members and friends in this fierce blaze, which rapidly engulfed a section of the neighbourhood,” he said.
On Tuesday, November 19, the Kenya Red Cross provided an update, confirming the fire had been contained and efforts to locate missing persons were underway.
“Together with the Nairobi City County Fire Department and community members, we have managed to contain a fire incident in Kitui Village, Majengo, Nairobi,” the organization stated.
“Around 50 households were affected, and sixteen people sustained minor injuries, all of whom were treated by Kenya Red Cross. The Kenya Red Cross remains on-site, supporting efforts to locate missing persons,” it added.
This tragic event came just a day after another fire broke out in Mlango Kubwa, Mathare, on Monday night, November 18, razing down 50 households.
The Kenya Red Cross confirmed the Mlango Kubwa fire was successfully contained by an emergency response team.
“Fire outbreak reported in Mathare, Mlango Kubwa area. Our Community-Based Disaster Response Teams (CBDRTs) are at the scene,” the organization said.
“Fire was contained by fire brigades alongside CBDRTs. An approximate 50 households were affected with no casualties involved,” it noted.
Emergency teams continue to work with community members to assist those affected and assess the full extent of the damage.
