Food items at a supermarket in Nairobi

The prices of five key food items are expected to rise in December, according to a survey conducted by the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK).

The Agricultural Survey, released on Tuesday, November 10, attributed the anticipated price hikes primarily to seasonality factors.

Among the affected items, tomatoes are expected to see a significant price increase.

“Most respondents anticipate a rise in tomato prices as market supply is likely to be impacted by the October-December 2024 rainy season,” the report stated.

“The expected price surge is largely driven by seasonal factors, as tomato supply typically declines during the rainy season and increases when dry conditions prevail,” it added.

Other food items projected to become more expensive include beans, green grams, maize, and cooking oil.

“Cooking oil prices are expected to rise in December 2024, reflecting trends in the global market, where the cost of these items has been climbing in recent months,” the report noted.

On the other hand, prices for some food items are forecast to remain stable or even decrease. These include rice and milk, thanks to favorable weather conditions that have improved pasture and increased imports from Uganda.
