Trade Cabinet Secretary nominee Lee Kinyanjui has revealed that his net worth stands at approximately Sh471 million.

Speaking during his approval hearing before the Committee on Appointments, chaired by National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Kinyanjui detailed the breakdown of his assets.

He disclosed that Sh399 million of his wealth is tied to shares in family businesses, while an apartment he owns is valued at Sh80 million. Kinyanjui also mentioned a loan of Sh8 million.

“I own an apartment worth Sh80 million, and I have a loan of Sh8 million,” he told the committee.

Reacting to Kinyanjui’s disclosure, Speaker Wetang’ula remarked, “For a former governor, that is very modest, I must say.”

Kinyanjui assured the committee of his dedication to the Trade docket if confirmed. He emphasized his willingness to take on challenges and his readiness to collaborate with Parliament for the country’s progress.

“I understand that opportunities like these do not come every day. Having served in public office before, I am prepared to face the challenges. The more challenges there are, the greater the justification for turning things around,” he said.

Kinyanjui highlighted the value of teamwork and pledged to work closely with his colleagues and lawmakers to achieve success.

“Teamwork is essential for success, and I will strive to build strong partnerships within my office and with Parliament. I pledge to give my best for Kenya,” he added.

The nominee addressed questions about his previous critiques of the Kenya Kwanza administration, clarifying that his remarks were intended as constructive feedback.

“There is a difference between criticizing policies and criticizing a government. For instance, pointing out that pending bills are affecting businesses is not an attack on the government but a plea from the business community to improve cash flow,” he explained.

Kinyanjui further disclosed that he resigned from his political party, the Ubuntu People’s Forum, upon his nomination to the Cabinet position.

“I have officially resigned from the Ubuntu party, though my heart remains connected to its philosophy of ‘I am because you are,’” he stated.

Kinyanjui, who previously served as Nakuru Governor under the Jubilee Party, lost his re-election bid to UDA’s Susan Kihika in 2022. Following his defeat, he founded the Ubuntu People’s Forum as a political platform aligned with his ideals.
