EACC Uncovers Bribery Scheme by Traffic Officers in Embu

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has exposed a bribery scheme involving traffic police officers in Embu during the festive season.

In a video shared on Friday, January 3, EACC detectives were seen recovering money concealed by officers from Wanguru Police Station. The cash, mainly in Ksh50 and Ksh100 notes, was stashed under a rock and hidden among weeds near a building.

“One of the ‘facilities’ in the Gathoge area along the Makutano-Embu Highway, where traffic police officers from Wanguru Police Station in Embu had begun storing bribes collected from motorists on December 26, 2024, before EACC intervened,” read the EACC’s caption.

The commission warned both motorists and police officers against engaging in bribery, emphasizing the need for integrity on the roads.

According to the EACC, nine officers were apprehended during a crackdown on bribery incidents across highways in Nakuru, Kajiado, and Kisii.

“The Commission urges all stakeholders, including motorists, traffic officers, and the public, to prioritize road safety by adhering to traffic laws,” the EACC stated.

The agency highlighted the dangers of corruption on the roads, noting that bribery undermines traffic law enforcement.

“Corruption on the roads compromises traffic law enforcement as it encourages motorists to get away with serious violations such as overspeeding, overloading, and driving uninsured or unroadworthy vehicles, posing serious risks to public safety,” EACC warned.

The commission reiterated its commitment to combating corruption and ensuring public safety, calling for collective responsibility from all road users.
