For a team that had been highly unfancied heading into the competition, the Harambee Stars have defied the odds by booking their place in the knockout stages of CHAN 2024 with a game to spare — and in dramatic fashion.
Kenya, reduced to 10 men after Crispine Erambo’s first-half red card, battled bravely to secure a stunning 1-0 victory over Morocco at a packed Kasarani Stadium on Sunday night. The win takes them to seven points at the top of Group A, guaranteeing their spot in the quarter-finals.
The Stars had opened their campaign with a 1-0 win over the Democratic Republic of Congo before grinding out a draw against Angola despite playing over 70 minutes a man down. Now, they have capped off their dream run so far with a statement win over the North African giants.
Morocco, who had been tipped as favourites after their 2-0 win over Angola in their opening match, were frustrated by Kenya’s tactical discipline and resilience — traits head coach Benni McCarthy has drilled into the side since taking over.
“Several positive things have come out of our first two matches, such as resilience and strong character, and I’m glad we showed that against Morocco,” McCarthy said after the game. “Morocco are unpredictable, so we had to be organised and produce quality in every part of the pitch — and the boys delivered.”
With their place in the last eight secured, Kenya will now face Zambia in their final group match, while Morocco take on DR Congo in a fight for the remaining quarter-final slot.
If the Harambee Stars finish top of Group A, they will face the runners-up from Tanzania’s group at the Kasarani Stadium. If they finish second, they will travel to Dar es Salaam to take on the Taifa Stars, who have already sealed their place in the knockouts.
